Threats to civilians in the Sahel are manifold – from ethnic/political militias to groups in opposition to rival communities. Sitting at the crossroads between the Sahel conflict and the Lake Chad Basin conflict, Niger is a lynchpin for stability and protection of civilians in the region. Over the last year, civilians in Niger’s Tillabéri region bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, and the Diffa region bordering Nigeria, have faced escalating violence and the trajectory of both conflicts is cause for serious concern. To improve the protection of civilians in the region and to complement its work with the G5 Sahel Joint Force, CIVIC has undertaken in-depth analysis of the threats to civilians and is laying the groundwork for more intensive programming.
