About the Position

Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international nonprofit with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians caught in conflict zones. Our mission is to work with armed actors and civilians in conflict to develop and implement solutions to prevent, mitigate, and respond civilian harm. The goal of the MENA/South Asia Program is to work with our country teams in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen to improve the safety and protection of civilians through advocacy, trainings, and community engagement. Learn more at

This internship is open to current graduate level students, those who have recently completed graduate studies, or those with an undergraduate degree and relevant work experience.

Internship duties may include, but are not limited to:

●     Attending relevant Washington, DC events and sharing notes with MENA/South Asia team;

●     Conducting brief research on civilian self-protection strategies in the Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen context;

●     Supporting program operations across three teams/grants;

●     Copy-editing documents pertaining to grants and research;

●     Monitoring conflicts and countries of interest;

●     Participating in weekly staff meetings at the organizational and field-office level;

●     Functioning as a self-sustaining member of the team.


Applicants should be flexible and have confidence in handling multiple tasks, as well as the ability to work in a team and independently. Applicants are expected to have excellent writing and research skills and should anticipate using these skills frequently. Knowledge of Arabic and/or Dari a plus. Interns will be expected to maintain a level of confidentiality and discretion when working with sensitive information.

Minimum Time Requirement: This is a full or part time internship (depending on candidate's schedule) and interns should be available for a period of at least three months, beginning in September 2020.

This is an unpaid internship; interns working in the Washington DC office qualify for a small daily stipend for food and travel.
