CIVIC seeks a highly qualified and motivated Senior Advisor, United Nations to lead the organization’s advocacy and engagement in New York with the UN Secretariat, UN bodies, Permanent Missions of UN member states, and non-governmental organizations.

Job Purpose:  The Senior Advisor, United Nations is the principal advisor and spokesperson for CIVIC’s issues at the UN and on UN-related issues in New York. The Senior Advisor is responsible for working with CIVIC’s programmatic staff to develop and implement advocacy strategies on the full range of countries and thematic issues on which CIVIC works. A significant percentage of the Senior UN Advisor’s time will be dedicated to working closely with CIVIC’s Peacekeeping team to develop and advance the Peacekeeping Program’s objectives. The individual will also help to shape the direction of CIVIC’s role and presence in New York. The Senior Advisor will initially lead a small team of advisors, analysts, and interns in New York, and will serve as a member of the organization’s extended senior leadership team which helps to shape and advance CIVIC’s overarching mission and objectives.

Travel:            Up to 25% (domestic and international)

Key Functions: The Senior Advisor, UN is responsible for-

-Substantively advancing CIVIC’s objectives, including engaging with and influencing Secretariat and member state policy-and decision-makers, building and leading civil society coalitions, participating in UN- and member state-led working groups, feeding into UN annual reports and debates on POC, and shaping thematic issues related to POC at the UN.

-Representing CIVIC at high-level and bilateral meetings with UN, member state, and NGO stakeholders.

-Identifying and seizing advocacy opportunities and developing short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to broaden constituencies for POC at the UN and beyond.

-Supporting efforts to strengthen the protection of civilians through UN peacekeeping, with a focus on influencing: UN peacekeeping policy and practice; peacekeeping reform initiatives; the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C34); Fifth Committee peacekeeping budget negotiations; and UN Security Council resolutions, including peacekeeping mandate renewals.

-Facilitate organizational planning to determine CIVIC’s near- and long-term role and presence in New York.

-Advising the Senior Management Team, Program Directors, and Country Directors about windows of opportunity and strategies for effectively advancing their policy priorities at the UN and with UN bodies and member states.

-Developing and providing CIVIC inputs into key UN policy processes, including reports, resolutions, and other legislative or procedural outcomes or products.

-Conceptualizing and organizing events, briefings, roundtables, and other private and public activities to advance CIVIC’s mission.

-Engaging with journalists on and off the record and writing blogs, op-eds, social media, and other communications content.

-Contributing to CIVIC’s success as a member of the organization’s extended senior leadership team which meets regularly to identify influencing opportunities, shape innovative POC programming, determine CIVIC’s policy and advocacy positions, and strengthen the organization’s culture and structure. 

-Managing UN programmatic activities, including ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements, delivering products on time and on budget, overseeing and being accountable for results, and reporting on impact to CIVIC’s donors, staff, stakeholders, and beneficiaries. 


Skills and Qualifications: This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual to shape CIVIC’s approach to engagement on the protection of civilians at the UN and ensure that CIVIC remains a thought leader on these issues. Specific requirements include-

-Minimum of an MA, MS, or JD preferred.

-10+ years of experience in a related field.

-Proven track record of successfully advocating on sensitive issues within the UN context and representing an organization to the UN, Member States, media outlets, and civil society partners. This includes a minimum of two years of experience engaging with the UN Secretariat, UN bodies, UN member states, and NGOs in New York.

-Deep networks with UN officials, permanent missions, and key member states in New York.

-Proven subject-matter expertise in CIVIC’s work especially protection of civilians and peacekeeping.

-Proven ability to develop innovative programs and advocacy strategies.

-Excellent verbal communications and writing skills.

-Strong research and analytical skills.

-Ability to provide high-quality and timely strategic advice for senior managers and external stakeholders.

-Strong leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage team members and deliver on all facets of the role. 

-Self-motivated, inquisitive, and able to anticipate and respond to needs and opportunities.

-Personal qualities of resourcefulness, diligence, tact, discretion, and integrity in all matters.

-Demonstrated ability to work as a constructive team player in a fast-paced, diverse, and stressful work environment.

-Fluency in English required.
