Intern, Development (Fall 2020)

Washington, DC · Full-time/Part-time · Intern

About The Position

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Center for Civilians in Conflict is an international nonprofit with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians caught in conflict zones. Our mission is to work with armed actors and civilians in conflict to develop and implement solutions to prevent, mitigate, and respond to civilian harm. We are advocates who believe that no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and advisors who provide practical solutions to preventing and responding to civilian harm. TEAM DESCRIPTION: CIVIC’s Development team identifies and secures the resources needed for our program teams to carry out their life-saving work in conflict zones around the world. We do this by identifying potential donors (whether governments, foundations, or individuals), building relationships with them, and offering them exciting opportunities to support our work. Our Development interns are a critical part of our team, and are given a front-row seat to how projects move from brainstorms on a whiteboard to funded projects being implemented in the field. Because the Development team sits at the nexus of CIVIC’s programs, you will have the rare chance of interacting with and learning from staff working on projects from Maiduguri to Kyiv, getting a truly global snapshot of what CIVIC does. Simultaneously, you will learn practical fundraising skills that will serve you well in any nonprofit or international affairs career. Indeed, our interns have gone on to find full-time employment in organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, Department of Defense, Department of State, Open Society Foundations, the World Bank, and others.

We’re looking for motivated candidates who:

  • Are excited about CIVIC’s work and can explain why our mission is important to them
  • See a clear link between this internship opportunity and their future goals
  • Are passionate and clear communicators (both written and oral)
  • Thrive in entrepreneurial environments
  • Not afraid to juggle multiple deadlines at once
  • Possess jedi-level Googling skills for Internet-based research projects
  • Are detail-oriented without losing the bigger picture
  • Don’t shy from asking questions when something is unclear
  • See themselves thriving as part of a supportive, fun-loving team

While there is no “typical” day on CIVIC’s Development team, typical intern duties may include:

  • Conducting background research on donor prospects and giving trends
  • Copy-editing donor proposals and reports
  • Participating in proposal design sessions
  • Coordinating donor proposals and other funding submissions
  • Tracking donor engagements on Salesforce
  • Writing donor acknowledgements
  • Planning fundraising events and travel
  • Representing CIVIC at relevant foreign policy events in Washington, DC
  • Communicating CIVIC’s work in a clear and compelling way
