Howard W. French is a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. French is former senior writer and longtime foreign correspondent at the New York Times. He served as the newspaper’s bureau chief in Japan, China, Central America and the Caribbean, and in West and Central Africa. He is the author of four books: Everything Under the Heavens:  How the Past Helps Shape China’s Push for Global Power; China’s Second Continent: How a Million Migrants are Building a New Empire in Africa; Disappearing Shanghai: Photographs and Poems from an Intimate Way of Life; and A Continent for the Taking: The Tragedy and Hope of Africa.
